Connecticut doesn’t lack for great fishing ports, yet few places can compete with Clinton when it comes to the variety of available species. Stripers, blues, fluke, scup, false albacore and blackfish are all present in the nearshore waters during the season, which runs from May to December.
“There are plenty of species to catch, especially in June,” says Capt. Justin Tralli of Sea Fever Charters (860) 999-2426. “If you want to catch big bass, snag some bunker inside Clinton Harbor at daybreak and live-line them over Southwest Reef. “
The blackfish action here is some of the best on the coast, with plenty of 3- to 4-pounders and a few white-chinners topping the 8-pound mark.
As August fades, pods of false albacore typically show up at Six Mile Reef, Long Sand Shoal and, occasionally, at the mouth of Clinton Harbor. The albies will often take a small Deadly Dick or KastMaster spoon. If using fly gear, try a Surf Candy, Bonito Bunny or Clouser Minnow.
